History Spotlight
Pottsville, Schuylkill County, resident Nicholas Biddle (circa 1796-1876) was immortalized by a carte de visite for being “the first man wounded in the
Great American Rebellion, Baltimore,
April 18, 1861.”
A plaque, dedicated to him is located on the "Soliders' Monument of Schuylkill County" located in Garfield Square, on Market Street. The monument, itself, is dedicated to "the first defenders of the capital," for the Great American Rebellion, Baltimore, all of these soldiers
were from Pottsville.
